Piazza del Campo is home to the twice annual Palio di Siena. We were fortunate enough to learn all about this historic race while on a tour of the city. Each district of Siena sponsors a jockey to race Il Palio, remarkably bareback, in a race that lasts no more than 2 minutes. The piazza is a irregular seashell shape, steeped in deep history, and a great spot to people watch while in Siena.
The tour we took was booked through viator.com, and included the towns Siena and San Gimignano. An informative and very professional tour guide walked our group through each city. In Siena, besides visiting a museum detailing the history of Il Palio, we visited St. Dominic Basilica, which houses the head of St. Catherine of Siena. The tour was well organized and just the drive through the Tuscan hills was amazing!
