Byodo-In is a Buddhist temple located at the base of the towering cliffs of the Ko’olau mountains, in a place called the Valey of the Temples, on the windward side of Oahu, Hawai‘i. The temple is a replica of a 900-year-old Buddhist temple at Uji in Kyoto prefecture of Japan. It is a non functioning Buddhist temple as it does not host a resident monastic community nor an active congregation. Inside the temple there is an 18 ft statue of the Lotus Buddha. Apart from worship, the temple is used for wedding ceremonies, office meetings and has been featured in TV/Movies such as the TV series Hawaii Five-O, Magnum, P.I, the ABC series Lost and the 2001 movie Pearl Harbor.
It is a peaceful and tranquil place to visit and the cost is minimal. General Admission $5.00 (ages 13-64), $4.00 Seniors (age 65 & up), $2.00 Children (2-12 years). The cost of admission goes towards the maintenance of the grounds.
The temple welcomes people of all faiths. While visiting you can worship, ring the 3 ton Buddhist peace bell, feed the koi, enjoy the silence and tranquil scenery as well as take amazing photography. Enjoy the photo gallery below:
