In case you missed it. Interview with the internationally acclaimed architect and designer David Rockwell, who was selected by Academy Awards producers Laurence Mark and Bill Condon to design the sets for this year’s Oscar telecast. The first architect to design the sets, he took his creative cue from the Kodak Theatre, which he also designed, to craft an immersive environment evocative of an intimate club.

Together with the producers, Rockwell took a fresh look at the award ceremony, and developed sets that create an atmosphere of an elegant party rather than a formal gathering. The theater and sets will be reorganized and re-envisioned to concentrate the energy for the live and broadcast audiences, powered by a visual narrative that will unfold through twelve transforming sets throughout the night.
“We created a spatial and architectural solution for the 2009 Oscars that is based on storytelling, spectacle, and community,” explained David Rockwell, founder and CEO of Rockwell Group. “We wanted to use a surprising and dramatic integration of technology and movement to celebrate the awards ceremony, which has become one of the greatest shared rituals of our time.”

Daughter of Legendary Peeler Sales Man Joe Ades

February 27th, 2009

Ruth Ades-Laurent, daughter of legendary vegetable peeler sales man Joe Ades appeared in Union Square today with her fathers left overs.  “Some fathers leave their kids buildings, my father left me peelers”, said Ades.  I’d say he left her with more than just peelers, he left her with a talent to sell.  Talking constantly while pealing away just like her father did.  She sold 4 units within 5 minutes at $5 a pop!    In fact it was her talking that caught my attention.  I have seen her father many times in Union Square over the past 10 years.  When I heard her voice I knew right away that it was his daughter.  It was a pleasant surprise!

Citibank.com hacked?

February 25th, 2009

UPDATE 3: Issue seems to have been resolved.

UPDATE 2: Further investigation reveals that this issue may be related to the AT&T network in the New York and New Jersey area.  tracert to citibank.com reveals that the network path from my office to citibank.com goes through the AT&T backbone at some point.  This also explains why it does not work from the iPhone.  So if you are having this problem you can open up a command prompt and type in tracert citibank.com.  Wait for the results and you should see AT&T.NET right around the 8th or 9th hop depending on your ISP.

UPDATE: This seems to be a sporadic issue only affecting some of their customers.

If you are a Citibank customer you may have noticed that their main website citibank.com has been down in the past 24 hours. A Citibank customer service representative confirmed that this has been an ongoing issue over the past two weeks. No specific reason for the outage was given but I was told to use myciti.com until the issue is resolved.

It is not clear how widespread this issue is since a google search does not reveal any news on it. However, I have tried accessing the site from a few different locations with no luck.

Based on the little information that I was given by customer service it is not clear whether they are having internal issues or if it is being attacked by hackers.
